I purchased the Black Diamond O1 bindings in order to have a good, sturdy binding that would perform well in bounds while still being easy to tour with. I had tried the O2 bindings before on a demo ski setup, and knew that they skied well. Since the O1s are basically O2s with a free pivot, I knew these would ski just as well. They didn’t disappoint. These bindings are very “active,” holding the front of your boot down to the ski quite effectively. Side to side rigidity is very good as well, making them very good for carving turns.
The free pivot mechanism functions very well. It is easy to engage and disengage, and the function of the pivot is excellent. Touring is just so much easier with this style of binding that it’s worth the extra expense.
And expensive these bindings are. They are also somewhat heavy. However, the performance makes the weight and cost worth it, and the excellent pivot makes the weight easier to bear. If you have the cash, these are excellent bindings that deserve your attention, particularly if you need one binding that can “do it all.”
